Anemic 2010-02-18T14:47:59Z 2010-08-31T11:24:02Z
I have a friend who has started injecting Rx insulin - she claims that it causes her to gain weight. But she has not been able to describe to me how the medication works.

When she is going to eat, she checks her blood sugar for her insulin dosage.... If she is in need of insulin, does she have a healthy reason to eat? Could she only eat when her blood sugar level dropped to a normal range? Wouldn't that be healthier? And if there are circumstances when she eats with high blood sugar & insulin, isn't that a time to eat very sparingly?

It seems to me that the insulin injection converts the blood sugar to fat storage, so the when she eats more, the blood sugar level won't be dangerous for her health. But, doesn't it mean that she already ate more than she needs - that's why her blood sugar is high? Is there a correlation between insulin injecting and weight/fat gain?
http://ask.diabetestalks.com/questions/241/have-problem-to-get-glucose-level-down Have problem to get glucose level down nick 2010-02-08T19:33:29Z 2010-08-25T05:24:14Z
My wife was diagnosed about 6 months ago - doc started her on gliclazide and she's now up to the maximum 4 tablets/day - 320mg - but her sugar levels are still very unstable - anywhere between 6 and 18. Samuel 2010-02-15T01:36:34Z 2010-02-15T01:36:34Z
I have been taking many types of blood pressure medication since 1985. I was changed from many medications to treat hypertension due to I was in the Military. After retiring from the U.S. Army I was prescribed many more medications to treat my hypertension. This was do to the numerous different doctors I was treated by at the Veterans Administration. I was diagnose at a type 2 diabetic in 2005. I am trying to find answers to see if my continuous treatment or lack of proper treatment might have caused my diabetes. I have heard that hypertension and diabetes run hand in hand. If so, was I going to get diabetes no matter what after all these years of hypertension? Or if my hypertension had been treated properly, would I not be suffering from diabetes now. Thank You for any information you can provide. I have checked numerous sources on the internet and have not gotten the answers I am looking for. Lisa 2010-02-12T18:04:59Z 2010-02-12T21:21:17Z
I was wondering how you are dealing with it emotionally.

I understand the medical aspects of it well, I actually have some medical background and dealt with my ex's diabetes for years before my son was diagnosed.

As the mother of a 3 yr old type 1 there is alot I still haven't let myself even think about in regards to how this will effect my sons life.

It can be more than a little overwhelming.

When he was diagnosed I closed off emotionally. I just accepted he had diabetes and immediately started re-learning everything I could to help maintain it the best I could. I was determined that I would not let this disease shorten or interfere in his quality of life.

I was determined that I was going to treat him like a normal toddler who happened to have diabetes, not like a diabetic child. I wasn't going to coddle him, I wasn't going to let it stop him from being a little boy and enjoying all the things little boys enjoy...but I never really thought about what that really meant. It was too much too really think about.

Then I read a post on this board about diabetic camps.

It has been almost a year now since my son became a diabetic. Almost a year since so much changed. It feels like forever. I still can't sleep through the night without checking his blood glucose. I haven't cried since the night they told me. I cried when I read that post. Harder and longer then when they first told me. The reality of how much this can and will effect my sons life... hit me hard. I will never be able to just send him to camp, sleep overs with friends or anywhere else for that matter.

It will always require planning and in certain situations special arrangements. I will always worry, course I guess every parent does even with non-diabetic children. Even once he is caring for it on his own I will worry. Maybe even especially then.

Even as I mourn the fact that there are limitations for him that I won't be able to always overcome just because I want it to be that way, it is comforting to know there are options, like diabetic camps for him. However I can't deny that at this point emotionally it is much harder for me than him.

I know there was nothing I could have done to change this, but I still feel guilty. I know he is doing great (his last A1c was 6.9), but I still feel like I am not doing enough. I know it really doesn't bother him much at this point, but I still worry in what ways is it effecting him that I don't see?

Maybe I just needed to let myself cry.
http://ask.diabetestalks.com/questions/216/what-is-good-time-to-test-a-glucose-after-eating What is good time to test a glucose after eating?
