I am diabetic and I take 5ml glipizide in the a.m. and a glucaphage in the evening. My blood sugar runs between 100 and 250 during the day. It is usually 150 when I go to bed and is around 97 when I get up in the morning.

If you wake up with your blood sugar at 97 that is a great blood sugar. 250 is to high that is when they expect you to start testing your urine for ketones. a non diabetic persons blood sugar should run between 80-120. The only time that you should eat chocolate or something to bring your blood sugar up is when your sugar goes below 70. When it registers on a glucose meters at 69 it is considered low. If you have an A1C done and your blood sugar is running at 250 your A1C would probably be around a 12. They want your A1C to be at a 7. You need to have your A1C checked by an endocrinologist and let them tell you the best way to control your diabetes. If you have your primary care doctor giving you diabetic medicine they don't specialize in diabetes and they can't tell you what will help you prevent complications from diabetes like an endocrinologist. I have been a type 1 for 22 years and I am on the insulin pump. A1C of 6.7 Please take my advice and see a specialist.
